General description

Sodium dichromate dehydrate (SDD), a hexavalent chromium compound is commonly used as an oxidizing agent. Chromium (VI) compounds are genotoxic and group 1 IARC (International Agency for Research on Cancer) carcinogen. SDD is one of the common contaminants found in drinking water. Its toxic effects and carcinogenicity has been studied.

Application

Sodium dichromate dehydrate may be used in preparing Jones reagent which is employed for oxidation reactions. It may be used in the oxidation of arylalkanes.
