General description

Red mercuric oxide possesses the ability to detect high energy radiation (X- and γ-rays) and is used in nuclear radiation detectors.

Application

Mercury(II) iodide may be used in the preparation of the following:
  • mercury(II) acetate
  • diiodobis(1-methyl-1,3-imidazolium-2-thiolato-S)mercury(II)
  • [Hg2(L)(I)4] and [(L′)Hg(μ-I)2HgI2]n (L = N, N′-bis(phenyl(pyridin-2-yl)methylene)propane-1,2-diamine, L′ = N-(phenyl(pyridin-2-yl)methylene)propane-1,2-diamine)
