General description

Endometriosis is a gynecologic condition that is characterized by the presence of endometrial tissue outside of the uterus. This condition affects approximately 6-10% of all women and can lead to significant pelvic pain and infertility. The limited availability of in vitro models hinders cellular, molecular, and pathophysiologic studies of endometriosis which translates to poor understanding of the disease and limited available treatments.
Several endometriotic cell lines were developed by researchers from Goethe University Frankfurt in Germany. One of these is the 12Z cell line which was derived from the endometrial peritoneum of a 37 year-old female undergoing laparoscopy. The 12Z cell line was immortalized using SV40 plasmid transfection. This cell line expresses both pan-cytokeratin and N-Cadherin.
One of the frequently-studied means for the initiation of endometriosis is retrograde menstruation that permits the deposition of endometrial tissues outside of the uterus. During this process, the invasive capabiity of cells is believed to be essential.
The 12Z immortalized human endometrial epithelial cell line is an established model for endometriosis as it is derived from endometriotic tissue that is positive for N-Cadherin+, a marker for invasiveness. This makes the 12Z iine a suitable model for the study of disease progression or therapeutic development. The 12Z cell line is frequently used in 2D or 3D invasion assays, as well as in biochemical assays to study the pathophysiology of endometriosis.

Source
The 12Z cell line was derived from endometrial peritoneum biopsy of a 37 year-old female. This cell line was immortalized via transfection of a plasmid containing SV40T.

Application

Each vial contains >=1X106 viable cells.

Cells are tested negative for infectious diseases by a Human Essential CLEAR Panel by Charles River Animal Diagnostic Services.

Cells are verified to be of human origin and negative for interspecies contamination from rat, mouse, Chinese hamster, Golden Syrian hamster, and Non-human Primate (NHP) as assessed by a Contamination Clear panel by Charles River Animal Diagnostic Services

Cells are negative for mycoplasma contamination.

Features and Benefits

The N-cadherin-positive 12Z human endometrial cell line is an established model for tissue invasion in endometriosis, and is used to study disease progression, pathogenesis, and therapeutic intervention.

Storage and Stability

Store cells in liquid nitrogen. The cells can be cultured for at least 10 passages after initial thawing without significantly affecting the cell marker expression and function.
