General description

BHI (Brain Heart Infusion) broth is a granulated selective medium recommended for the cultivation of various fastidious bacteria and the cultivation of Staphylococci for the plasma coagulase test. The granules ensure rapid and uniform dissolution in water. It also prevents clumping of the medium and inhalation of the airborne powder. Enzymatic digest of animal tissues and infusions (calf brain and beef heart) serve as sources of carbon, nitrogen, essential growth factors, amino acids, and vitamins. Glucose serves as a source of energy. Disodium phosphate helps in maintaining the buffering action of the medium, whereas sodium chloride maintains the osmotic equilibrium of the medium.

Application

BHI (Brain Heart Infusion) broth is a highly nutritious and buffered medium to support the growth of fastidious and non-fastidious microorganisms, including aerobic and anaerobic bacteria.
