General description

Phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate/(PI(4,5)P2 or PIP2) is one of the major constituent of the inner leaflet of the plasma membrane, especially in eukaryotic cells. It is an important phosphoinositide phosphate species in mammalian cells.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate/(PI(4,5)P2 or PIP2) actively participates in numerous cellular signaling pathways. It acts as a precursor of phosphatidylinositol (3,4,5)-trisphosphate (PI(3,4,5)P3). It helps in the assembly of several viruses, like human immunodeficiency virus 1 (HIV1).
