General description
FLT1 (fms-related tyrosine kinase 1) or VEGFR (vascular endothelial growth factor receptor) is one of the receptor tyrosine kinase, which acts as a receptor for VEGF. VEGF is a predominant angiogenesis stimulating factor. FLT1 is a transmembrane receptor. Soluble FLT1 (sFLT1) is an alternatively spliced soluble form of FLT1, expressed by multiple tissues. It acts as a negative regulator of VEGF. It does not contain the cytosolic and transmembrane domains.
Biochem/physiol Actions
FLT1 (fms-related tyrosine kinase 1) or VEGFR (vascular endothelial growth factor receptor) is implicated in angiogenesis in tumors, which plays a key role in tumorigenesis, invasion and metastasis of tumors, especially the malignant ones. In human circulation, angiogenesis is balanced by soluble FLT1 (sFLT1) and VEGF. An imbalance leads to multiple conditions such as pre-eclampsia. sFLT1 plays an essential role in the angiogenesis of placenta. An overexpression of this protein in placenta is associated with prenatal arsenic exposure and thus, reduced birth weight.

Endothelial injury, which may present clinically as hypertension, proteinuria and increased von Willebrand Factor (vWF) level, is a common manifestation in IgA nephropathy (IgAN). However, causal factors for endothelial injury in IgAN are not completely understood. An imbalance of vascular

There is increasing epidemiologic evidence that arsenic exposure in utero is associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes and may contribute to long-term health effects. These effects may occur at low environmental exposures but the underlying molecular mechanism is not clear. We

Therapeutic angiogenesis is likely to require the administration of factors that complement each other. Activation of the receptor tyrosine kinase (RTK) Flk1 by vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is crucial, but molecular interactions of other factors with VEGF and Flk1

Lung inflammation and epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT) are two pathogenic features for the two contextual diseases: chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and lung cancer. VEGFR1 (or FLT1) plays a certain role in promoting tumour growth, inflammation and EMT. To

The vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and its high-affinity binding receptors, the tyrosine kinases Flt-1 and Flk-1, are thought to be important for the development of embryonic vasculature. Here we report that Flt-1 is essential for the organization of embryonic
