General description

Bile Esculin Azide Agar are stackable specially designed plates that helps increase the safety during handling, transport and incubation. The agar plates are of standard 90mm diameter. Bile esculin azide agar is a selective media for isolation and presumptive identification of intestinal Enterococci by Membrane filtration method. Casein, peptone, yeast extract serves as sources of carbon, nitrogen, amino acids, vitamins and essential growth nutrients. Bile and sodium azide, inhibits most of the other accompanying bacteria. Esculin in the medium is hydrolyzed to esculetin and dextrose. Esculetin reacts with ammonium ferric citrate to form a dark brown or black complex, visualized as a zone of black precipitate around the colonies.

Application

Bile Esculin agar is used for the confirmation of pathogenic Enterococcus sp in water samples as stated in the ISO 7899.
