General description

C20 Ceramide (d18:1/20:0) or N-arachidoyl-D-erythro-sphingosine is a synthetic ceramide containing sphingosine with arachidonic acid. Ceramide synthase 2 is responsible for the synthesis of C20 ceramide.

Application

C20 Ceramide (d18:1/20:0) has been used:
  • as a standard to quantify ceramide content in muscle tissue samples using high-performance liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry (LC/MS2)
  • as a standard for the quantitation of sphingolipid metabolites
  • to study its effects on mitochondrial-to-cytosolic stress response (MCSR) induction

Biochem/physiol Actions

Altered levels of C20 ceramide might function as a potential biomarker for monitoring tumor.

Defects in mitochondrial metabolism have been increasingly linked with age-onset protein-misfolding diseases such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and Huntington's. In response to protein-folding stress, compartment-specific unfolded protein responses (UPRs) within the ER, mitochondria, and cytosol work in parallel to ensure cellular

Proliferating thyroid cells are more sensitive to UV-C radiations than quiescent cells. The effect is mediated by nuclear phosphatidylcholine and sphingomyelin metabolism. It was demonstrated that proton beams arrest cell growth and stimulate apoptosis but until now there have been

One of the most fundamental adaptive physiological events is the response of skeletal muscle to high-intensity resistance exercise, resulting in increased protein synthesis and ultimately larger muscle mass. However, muscle growth in response to contraction is attenuated in older humans.

We aimed to determine sphingolipid levels and examine apoptotic pathways in human retinal pigment epithelial cells (ARPE-19) undergoing endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress. Cells were treated with tunicamycin (TM) to induce ER stress and tauroursodeoxycholic acid (TUDCA), an ER stress inhibitor
