Gene Information

human ... ARG1(383)

General description

The gene encoding arginase 1 (ARG1), spanning 10-15kb on genomic DNA, is localized on human chromosome 6q23.2. It consists of eight exons. The protein consists of 322 amino acids and is expressed in the liver, red blood cells, lactating mammalian glands and the kidney.

Application

For research use only. Not for use in diagnostic procedures.
Please refer to the attached Protocolfor details.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Arginase 1 (ARG1) is a liver enzyme involved in the hydrolysis of arginine to form ornithine and urea. In addition to urea cycle, ARG1 is also implicated in various cellular processes, such as macrophage-mediated cytotoxicity and regulation of immune response. The encoded protein is also involved in allergen challenged lungs, in autoimmune inflammation in the central nervous system and in acute liver injury. Deficiency or mutations in the gene leads to a rare urea cycle disorder, argininemia.
