General description

Alcian blue is a large conjugated dye molecule, and comprises of a central copper-containing pthalocyanine ring linked to four isothiouronium groups via thioether bonds. The isothiouronium groups are responsible for the cationic nature of alcian blue owing to them being moderately strong bases. It was initially used in dyeing of textile fibres. Alcian blue 8GX is a dye recommended normally for histological technique.

Application

Alcianblue 8GX solution has been used as a staining dye for chondrocytic, osteoblastic and adipocytic differentiation. It has also been used for the staining of sections in immunohistochemistry.

However, the in vitro expansion of chondrocytes under standard culture conditions inevitably leads to the dedifferentiation of chondrocytes and contributes to suboptimal clinical outcomes. To address
