General description

Dichloromethane (methylene chloride) is a clear, colorless, non-flammable, volatile liquid chlorinated hydrocarbon with a sweet, pleasant smell and emits highly toxic fumes of phosgene when heated to decomposition. It is primarily used as a solvent in paint removers, in aerosol formulations, and as a solvent in the manufacture of pharmaceuticals. It is also used as a degreasing agent in electronics manufacturing and as an ethane foam blowing agent. Above all that it is used as an extraction solvent in the preparation of decaffeinated coffee, hop extracts and spice oleoresins.

Application

Dichloromethane may be used as an analytical reference standard for the determination of the analyte in spice oleoresins, biological samples as well as decaffeinated instant and ground coffee samples by gas chromatography (GC) technique.
