General description
Eagle′s minimum essential medium (MEM) is a synthetic culture medium, which is composed of balanced salt solutions, and amino acids and vitamins. These components are essential for the growth of cultured cells. MEM might be supplemented with non-essential amino acids, to make MEM non-essential amino acid solution. The non-essential amino acids include L-alanine, L-asparagine, L-aspartic acid, L-glycine, L-serine, L-proline and L-glutamic acid.
Application
Adding supplements of amino acids to media both stimulates growth and prolongs the viability of cells in culture. MEM Non-essential Amino Acid Solution supplement adds nutrients and reduces the biosynthetic burden on cell in vitro.
MEM Non-essential Amino Acid Solution has been used in Dulbecco′s minimum essential media for the maintenance of mammalian cells. It has been supplemented in medium prepared for oocyte maturation.

Biochem/physiol Actions
Studies on hybridoma culture shows that addition of Eagle′s minimum essential medium (MEM) non-essential amino acid leads to enhanced membrane stability, during death phase of the culture. This also results in increased antibody secretion during death phase, and decreased lactate concentration.
