General description

IgM is a pentameric immunoglobulin, with each monomer having a light and heavy chain. The two types of IgM comprise natural and adaptive.

Application

Anti-Human IgM (μ-chain specific) antibody produced in rabbit has been used in enzyme linked immunosorbent assay.

Biochem/physiol Actions

IgM antibodies are present as pentamers in the serum and are produced in response to antigens.
IgM serves as prime antibody in providing defense. It activates complement C1q. It is regarded as a marker for identifying tumor-associated antigens. Hyper-IgM syndrome is implicated with high IgM levels accompanied by low IgA, IgG and IgE levels.

Preparation Note

treated to remove lipoproteins

Previous studies have discerned two forms of polymeric mouse IgM: moderately cytolytic (complement-activating) pentamer, which contains J chain, and highly cytolytic hexamer, which lacks J chain. To investigate the relationships among polymeric structure, J chain content, and cytolytic activity, we
