General description

Silicon dioxide (SiO2) exists in three crystalline forms, namely quartz, tridymite and cristobalite. It reacts with hydrofluoric acid to form silicon tetrafluoride (SiF4) and water. Silicates are formed on reacting SiO2 with alkali melts.[1] SiO2 is the main component in glass, brick and concrete and also forms the insulator in silicon devices.[2] The alteration of the surface of SiO2 with (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APTES) for binding lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) to form an amino layer has been reported.[3] The silicon-silicon dioxide structure has been investigated at liquid nitrogen temperature by electron spin resonance spectra.[4]

Application

Silicon dioxide may be used to produce silicon by electrochemical reduction in the presence of calcium chloride (CaCl2) electrolyte.[5]
