General description

7α-Hydroxy-3-oxo-4-cholestenoic acid (7-HOCA) is synthesized extrahepatically from cholesterol. The enzyme oxysterols-7α-hydrolase (CYP7B1) acts on precursor 27-hydroxycholesterol (27-OHC) to generate 7-HOCA.. 7-HOCA is catabolized in the liver.

Application

7α-hydroxy-3-oxo-4-cholestenoic acid has been used as an analyte in ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC) system.

Biochem/physiol Actions

The levels of 7α-hydroxy-3-oxo-4-cholestenoic acid (7-HOCA) in cerebrospinal fluid are not correlated to neurodegeneration but may serve as a diagnostic marker to trace blood-brain barrier integrity.
