General description

Gallium nitrate is the anhydrate salt of the naturally occurring heavy metal.

Application

Gallium (III) nitrate hydrate can be used as a:
  • Catalyst in the epoxidation of olefins in presence of hydrogen peroxide.
  • Dopant in the preparation of ZnO nanorod arrays. The addition of Ga can improve the luminescence quality of ZnO nanorods.
  • Precursor to synthesize Ga-MCM-41 materials (mesoporous silicate molecular sieves). Ga-MCM-41 can act as a catalyst in the liquid-phase isomerization of α-pinene.

Gallium nitrate was originally developed as an antineoplastic agent; however, further studies have revealed that this drug has extremely potent effects on turnover of bone, and that low doses can be used to reduce bone resorption. Like the bisphosphonates, gallium

Different possible options were investigated to combine an apatitic calcium phosphate cement with gallium ions, known as bone resorption inhibitors. Gallium can be either chemisorbed onto calcium-deficient apatite or inserted in the structure of β-tricalcium phosphate, and addition of these
