Application
Zinquin has been used to detect intracellular zinc.
Biochem/physiol Actions
Zinquin is a membrane-permeant fluorophore. It is used to detect zinc in cells by UV fluorescence. Zinquin ethyl ester can be used to monitor the change in intracellular concentrations of Zn2+ in thymocytes and hepatocytes. The ester is excited at 368nm and emits at 490nm.

3,3'-Dihydroxyisorenieratene (DHIR) is a structurally unusual carotenoid exhibiting bifunctional antioxidant properties. It is synthesized by Brevibacterium linens, used in dairy industry for the production of red smear cheeses. The compound protects cellular structures against photo-oxidative damage and inhibits the UV-dependent

Tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L. cv Xanthi) plants were exposed to toxic levels of zinc (Zn). Zn exposure resulted in toxicity signs in plants, and these damages were partly reduced by a calcium (Ca) supplement. Confocal imaging of intracellular Zn using

The baker's yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae was used as a model to visualize intracellular labile zinc under conditions of nutritional zinc imbalance. Zinc-specific staining was performed in yeast cells using both Zinquin fluorescence and zinc-selenium autometallography. Both techniques resulted in specific

Mouse models of asthma show that zinc deficiency is associated with airway inflammation (AI), which is attenuated by zinc supplements. Whether zinc has a similar role in the human airway remains controversial, with studies demonstrating both high and low plasma
