Application

  • Spectrophotometric Determination of Pharmaceuticals: Potassium permanganate is widely used in the spectrophotometric determination of pharmaceutical compounds. For example, it has been employed in the oxidative derivatization of beta-blockers such as atenolol and propranolol in alkaline medium, enabling the sensitive and accurate quantification of these drugs in pharmaceutical formulations. This method provides a rapid and cost-effective approach for pharmaceutical analysis (Vaikosen et al., Reviews in Analytical Chemistry, 2020).

  • Environmental Monitoring: Potassium permanganate is used in environmental studies to oxidize and determine pollutants in water and soil samples. It is particularly effective in the oxidation of organic contaminants, facilitating their detection through various analytical techniques. Research has demonstrated the application of potassium permanganate in monitoring the oxidative degradation of ethanol in aqueous acidic media, highlighting its role in environmental analysis (Shimpi, International Journal of Science and Research, 2023).

  • Food Preservation: Potassium permanganate is incorporated into packaging materials to extend the shelf life of perishable foods by scavenging ethylene, a ripening agent. Recent developments include the creation of low-density polyethylene-based multilayer films containing potassium permanganate and pumice, which effectively preserve the quality of avocados during storage. This application is crucial for reducing food waste and maintaining the quality of fresh produce (Wang and Ajji, Food Chemistry, 2023).
