General description

Phosphatidylcholine (PC) is a major bilayer-forming phospholipid in which the headgroup carries a positively and negatively charged quaternary amine and a phosphate, respectively.

Application

18:0-14:0 PC (1-stearoyl-2-myristoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine) may be used in liposomes to study its interference in the proliferation of several cell lines using transmission electron microscopy (TEM).

Biochem/physiol Actions

Phosphatidylcholine (PC) can form a hydrophobic surface in the mucus by acting as a surfactant to inhibit the penetrance of bacteria.

Phosphatidylcholines are the major phospholipid component of most eukaryotic cell membranes. Phosphatidylcholines have been shown to actively participate in regulatory and metabolic processes. Dysfunctional metabolic processes have been linked to human disease and can result in altered phosphatidylcholine structural features
