General description

Glucose is the energy currency essential for physiological processes in the living cells. It serves as a precursor for glycoproteins, glycolipids and glycosaminoglycans.

Application

D-(+)-Glucose solution has been used as a medium supplement:
  • in Dulbecco′s Modified Eagle Medium (DMEM) for culturing Flp-In  293 cells
  • in dissection medium for coronal slices from rat brain
  • in neurobasal medium for culturing hippocampi cells

Provides the primary energy source for cell metabolism.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Glucose is a crucial component for the growth and maintenance of mammalian cells in in vitro conditions and is essential for productivity and quality. Its high metabolic turnover favors osteoclast differentiation. The levels of glucose modulate the migration and growth of tumor cells. HeLa cells display high mobility at low glucose levels.
