General description

Cysteamine is an aminothiol that can reduce important oxidized disulfide molecules such as cystine to yield cysteine.

Application

Cysteamine is used in a wide range of applications such as regulation of gene expression, depletion of somatostatin and coating of nanoparticles. It may be used to study the potential value of cystine in metabolism disorders such as cystinosis. Cysteamine may be used as a redox sensitive component in biosensor development.

Other Notes

Aminothiol radioprotector; Inducer of duodenal ulcers in rodents; Depletes somatostatin concentration in rat tissues.

Administration of cysteamine (mercaptoethylamine) induces in rats severe perforating duodenal ulcers. Because the ulcerogenic properties of cysteamine are markedly reduced by treatment with somatostatin, we considered the possibility that cysteamine-induced duodenal ulcer might be mediated by depletion of tissue somatostatin

Cysteamine and its dimeric form cystamine have been applied to the rat striatum by local injection. Both compounds resulted in a dose-dependent decrease of somatostatin levels. Maximal reduction of somatostatin (by about 50%) was obtained at a dose of 50

Cysteamine is widely used in rodents to induce duodenal ulcer. Herein, the pathogenesis of duodenal ulceration in its earliest stages was reviewed using findings from cysteamine- and propionitrile-induced duodenal ulcer in rodent models, especially taking into account changes in the
