Descripción general

Rift valley fever virus (RVFV) is an enveloped RNA virus belonging to the Phlebovirus genus of the family Bunyaviridae. RVFV possesses a single stranded segmented RNA genome composed of a large (L), a medium (M), and a small (S) segment. The L segment codes for the RNA-dependent RNA polymerase. The M segment codes for a polyprotein which is the precursor to the glycoproteins G1 and G2 and two non-structural proteins, 14K and 78K. The S segment codes for the nucleoprotein N and the non-structural protein NSs.

Inmunógeno

Antibody was raised against a 20 amino acid synthetic peptide near the center of the RVF virus.

Acciones bioquímicas o fisiológicas

Rift valley fever virus (RVFV) causes rift valley fever (RVF), an arthropod-borne viral disease. The virus is transmitted either by an arthropod or direct transmission by contact or aerosol among the hosts. The non-structural phosphoprotein (NSs) is responsible for the virulence in the pathogenic RVFV and suppresses human interferon gene expression. The fever is mainly observed in sheep and cattle. In humans, RVF clinical symptoms includes benign fever to severe encephalitis, retinitis, and fatal hepatitis with haemorrhagic fever. RVFV may block α/β interferon (IFN-α/β) expression in host and may target transcription factor aswell TFIIH.
