Descripción general

Calponin is a 34-kD polypeptide that interacts with actin, tropomyosin, and calmodulin. Itis involved in the smooth muscle contraction mechanism and is restricted exclusively to smoothmuscle tissue. Anti-calponin has been found to be useful in staining myoepithelium and thushas been used to confirm the presence of myoepithelial cells in benign breast proliferationand their absence in invasive breast carcinomas. Calponin positivity has also been noted inmyoepithelial neoplasms and pleomorphic adenoma of the salivary gland.
