Application

Thymol has been used to study:
  • the effect of thymol on the viability of Bacillus cereus.
  • its effect on growth and production of citrinin from Penicillium citrinum.
  • the effect of thymol on insect and human γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptors.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Thymol (5-methyl-2-isopropylphenol), a monocyclic phenolic compound, is a vital constituent of Thymus vulgaris essential oil. It has been used in dental preparations to kill odor-producing bacteria. Thymol serves as a preservative through its antimicrobial and antioxidant properties. In addition, thymol also has molluscicidal and insecticidal properties. Thymol acts as an allosteric modulator of human γ-aminobutyric acid (GABAA) receptors.
