General description

NGFβ (nerve growth factor β) is a protein involved in signal transduction, and expressed by multiple tissues such as placenta, urothelium and bladder smooth muscle cells. It was discovered by Levi-Montalcini, and is the founding member of the neurotrophin and belongs to the NGF family.

Application

NGFβ (nerve growth factor β) has been used for the treatment of normal human bronchial epithelial cells (NHBE), to determine its influence on ion transport in the presence of amiloride, NPPB, and ouabain. It has also been used for the apical incubation with MKHS (modified Krebs-Henseleit solution) in cells to determine its stability and concentration post- prolonged incubation periods in MKHS.

Biochem/physiol Actions

NGFβ (nerve growth factor β) is essential for the differentiation and survival of neurons. It also plays a key role in the development and maintenance of nervous system. It is also involved in angiogenesis, and facilitates tumorigenesis such as, oral, breast and prostate cancers. It has potential as marker for the diagnosis of interstitial cystitis/painful bladder syndrome (IC/PBS) and overactive bladder (OAB), and might also aid in determining the therapy for the same. It might be involved in changes in placental function, as NGFβ signaling is influenced by antenatal depression and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) treatment.

Reconstitution

Centrifuge the vial prior to opening. Reconstitute in water to a concentration of 0.1-1.0 mg/ml. Do not vortex. This solution can be stored at 2-8°C for up to 1 week. For extended storage, it is recommended to further dilute in a buffer containing a Stabilizer (example 5% Trehalose) and store in working aliquots at -20°C to -80°C.
