General description

Chromogranin A (CgA) is a circulating protein liberated by the neuroendocrine system. It is a glycoprotein that is located on human chromosome 14.
Chromogranin A (a protein of 439 amino acid which is encoded on chromosome 14) is present in neuroendocrine cells throughout the body, including the neuroendocrine cells of the large and small intestine, adrenal medulla and pancreatic islets. It is an excellent marker for carcinoid tumors, phenochromocytomas, paragangliomas, and other neuroendocrine tumors. Coexpression of chromogranin A and neuron specific enolase (NSE) is common in neuroendocrine neoplasms.

Immunogen

Recombinant protein encoding human chromogranin A.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Chromogranin A (CgA) controls vascular physiology and angiogenesis. It modulates the storage and liberation of catecholamine via intracellular (vesiculogenic) and extracellular (catecholamine release–inhibitory) mechanisms. CHGA is essential to generate catecholamine secretory vesicles in chromaffin-lineage PC12 cells and is required to promote a regulated secretion system in nonsecretory cells.
