General description

5-cyano-2,3-di-(p-tolyl)-tetrazolium chloride is a Redox Sensitive tetrazolium salt producing a fluorescent formazan (only in solid state) upon reduction; It indicates the respiratory activity in cells.

Application

5-cyano-2,3-di(p-tolyl) tetrazolium chloride (CTC)-reduction test is used for live/dead analysis. 5-cyano-2,3-di-(p-tolyl)-tetrazolium chloride has been employed in histochemistry and for determining cell viability, for eukaryotic cell viability assays and bacterial viability experiments, 5-cyano-2,3-di-(p-tolyl)-tetrazolium chloride (CTC) is the most often employed compound.

For many years various tetrazolium salts and their formazan products have been employed in histochemistry and for assessing cell viability. For the latter application, the most widely used are 3-(4,5-dimethyl-2-thiazolyl)-2,5-diphenyl-2H-tetrazolium bromide (MTT), and 5-cyano-2,3-di-(p-tolyl)-tetrazolium chloride (CTC) for viability assays of
