General description

RVS (RAPPAPORT-VASSILIADIS-Soya) broth is a selective medium for the enrichment and isolation of Salmonella. It is a modification of the original Rappaport medium, where soya peptone is used instead of tryptone (peptone from casein) to improve recovery rates of Salmonella. The efficiency of RVS broth for selection of Salmonella is based on (a) the ability of Salmonella sp. to multiply at relatively high osmotic pressures, at relatively low pH values, at a high temperature, and with modest nutritional requirements and (b) the suppression of the toxic effect of malachite green towards Salmonellae in the presence of magnesium chloride.

Application

RVS (RAPPAPORT-VASSILIADIS-Soya) broth (base) is used for the selective enrichment of Salmonella from food and animal feed, water, and other materials.
