General description

C10 Ceramide (d18:1/10:0) is a synthetic ceramide containing sphingosine with decanoic acid. It has a short acyl chain length than sphingosine acyl chain.

Application

C10 Ceramide (d18:1/10:0) or N-decanoyl-D-erythro-sphingosine has been used:
  • as an internal standard in galactocerebrosidase (GALC) assay
  • to study its role on the physical properties of edible organogels and on their ability to induce cell death of various cancer cell lines
  • to study its mixing behavior with other ceramides having the same sphingosine base but varying N-linked acyl chain length

Biochem/physiol Actions

Ceramides modulate stress responses and inflammation. It also controls cell differentiation, proliferation and apoptosis.

A ceramide commonly found in mammalian cells, C16-ceramide (N-palmitoyl-d-erythro-sphingosine), is capable of forming large, protein-permeable channels in the mitochondrial outer membrane (MOM). However, C16-ceramide is unable to permeabilize the plasma membrane of erythrocytes. This specificity is unexpected considering that ceramide

The stratum corneum is composed of protein-enriched corneocytes embedded in an intercellular matrix of nonpolar lipids organized as lamellar layers and giving rise to epidermal permeability barrier (EPB). EPB defects have an important role in the pathophysiology of skin diseases
