About This Item
Application
Ethidium bromide has been used to stain polyacrylamide gels for small-scale transcription reactions. It has also been used for the quantification of DNA.
Biochem/physiol Actions
Ethidium bromide is a red fluorescent dye that reacts with the DNA of membrane-damaged cells by intercalating. It is used for visualizing DNA in gels. Ethidium bromide is carcinogenic with moderate toxicity.
