B4GALNT1 (β-1,4-N-acetyl-galactosaminyl transferase 1) gene localizes to human chromosome 12q, and codes for the enzyme GM synthase.

Anwendung

Biochem./physiol. Wirkung

B4GALNT1 (β-1,4-N-acetyl-galactosaminyl transferase 1) enzyme catalyzes the second step in the synthesis of complex gangliosides. Studies in families from Kuwait, Italy and the Old Order Amish show that mutations in this gene are responsible for a neurodegenerative phenotype, which is classed as a complex type of hereditary spastic paraplegia.
