General description

Dextran 40 is primarily composed of glucose units linked together, with the predominant type of linkage being α-1:6. It is obtained through controlled breakdown and separation of certain polysaccharides that are synthesized when certain strains of Leuconostoc mesenteroides bacteria ferment sucrose. Dextran 40 has a weight average molecular weight within the range of 35,000 to 45,000.

Application

Dextran 40 USP reference standard for use in specified quality tests and assays.

Also used to prepare a system suitability solution during optical and specific rotation of Dextran 40 by liquid chromatography method coupled to a Refractive index detector.
