General description

Adenosine diphosphate (ADP) is a crucial component for energy flow in living organisms. Its structure consists of a sugar backbone connected to adenine and two phosphate groups attached to the fifth carbon atom of the ribose sugar. ADP serves a precursor for ATP biosynthesis. ADP acts as a weak platelet agonist, specifically targeting the P2Y receptor. However, ADP plays a vital role in platelet function by enhancing the effects of other platelet agonists and promoting the stability of platelet aggregates when released from platelet dense granules.

Application

Adenosine 5′-diphosphate has been used to study the release, neuronal effects, and removal of extracellular β-nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (β-NAD+) in the rat brain. Adenosine 5′-diphosphate has also been used to compare prasugrel versus clopidogrel antiplatelet therapy after acute coronary syndrome.
Adenosine 5′-diphosphate monopotassium salt dihydrate (ADP) has been used:
  • in titration to determine complex I-supported respiration in permeabilized muscle fibers
  • in titrations to determine ADP-stimulated respiratory kinetics
  • in the preparation of ADP solution for measuring mitochondrial respiration
