General description
Folic acid, a water-soluble B vitamin, is found in several food products. As it is not generated naturally in the human body, diet is one of the easiest ways to obtain it. It plays a crucial role in the biochemical synthesis and repair of DNA and is used in the management of megaloblastic anemias, neural tube defects such as anencephaly and spina bifida. Pharmaceutical drug forms of folic acid are desirable for supplementing its consumption through the diet.
