General description
Produced by the anaerobic bacillus Clostridium tetani. Tetanus toxin is one of the deadliest toxins known. Composed of two polypeptide chains joined by a single interchain disulfide bond. The heavy chain (100 kDa) participates in binding to the nerve terminals, internalization, retrograde axonal transport, and membrane translocation of the light chain (50 kDa) into the neuronal cytosol. The light chain inhibits neurotransmitter release after reduction of the disulfide bridge.
