General description

DOPS is an excellent substitute for the naturally occurring Brain PS. It has similar physical properties and is more stable to oxidation. DOPS has been used, along with DOPC and DOPE, in lipid mixtures to mimic platelet membranes for coagulation studies.
Phosphoserine/phosphatidylserine (PS) is an endogenous phospholipid, that is found in all polyanionic macromolecules.

Application

18:1 PS (DOPS) has been used:
  • in liposomes (multi-lamellar vesicles) preparation
  • as a component in incubation buffer to measure exosomes associated procoagulant activity
  • in the preparation of lipid vesicles

Biochem/physiol Actions

Phosphoserine (PS) can be used as a template for the recognition of cancer antigen 125 (CA 125). It is very essential for healthy nerve cell membranes and myelin. Exogenous PS can be actively absorbed in humans. It has the ability to cross the blood-brain barrier. It plays a key role in the formation of short-term memory, the consolidation of long-term memory, the ability to create new memories and several other cognitive activities. It actively participates in the locomotor functions, like rapid reactions and reflexes.
