General description

Sepharose 4B is an agarose bead and a polymer of Gal β1,4 [3,6]-anhydro-L-galactose. Sepharose aids in fractionating larger molecules and is devoid of charged saccharides. Presence of 3,6-anhydro-L-galactose resists biological degradation. Hydrogen bonds stabilize the sepharose gel structure. Sepharose is widely used in affinity chromatography by cross linking various ligands on the matrix.

Application

Sepharose 4B has been used:
  • to conjugate scorpion venom to be used in affinity chromatography
  • for clearing of protein extracts prior to immunoprecipitation
  • for gel purification and desalting of phospholipid vesicles
  • for adsorption of immunoglobulin G (IgG)
