General description

Plate Count Agar is the recommended medium forthe isolation of microorganisms in milk and other dairy products. The enzymaticdigest of casein (tryptone) with a high level of free amino acids is a nitrogensource. Yeast extract primarily supplies the B-complex vitamins. Glucose is anenergy source for the growth of bacteria, while agar is the solidifying agent.Plate Count Agar is also suitable for determining bacterial count from sterilerooms.

Application

Plate Count Agar is a non-selective medium for the plate count of microorganisms in water, food, milk, dairy products, beverages, animal feed, and other materials.

Preparation Note

Suspend 17.5 g in 1 litre of distilled water. Dissolve by bringing to the boil with frequent stirring, mix and distribute into final containers. Sterilize by autoclaving at 121°C for 15 minutes.

Other Notes

Comparison of β-glucuronidase and indole-based direct plating methods for enumeration of unstressed E. coli

Footnote

We offer two media types: the superior granulated GranuCult® and the cost-efficient powdered NutriSelect® culture media, depending on your needs.
The designations basic, plus, or prime are added to indicate the quality control level, from basic quality control to standard QC plus to prime for full regulatory compliance.
