Cell Line Origin

Rat kidney epithelial

Cell Line Description

Cloned from the same mixed culture of normal rat kidney cells as NRK-49F, but has epithelial-like morphology. It has distinct growth and transforming characteristics distinct from NRK-49F.

Application

NRK-52E has been used to study the effects of altered selenium supply on the expression of endogenous thioredoxin reductase (TrxR).

Culture Medium

DMEM + 2mM Glutamine + 1% Non Essential Amino Acids (NEAA) + 5-10% Foetal Bovine Serum (FBS) or New Born Calf Serum (NBCS).

Subculture Routine

Split sub-confluent cultures (70-80%) 1:3 to 1:6 i.e. seeding at 1-3x10,000 cells/cm2 using 0.25% trypsin or trypsin/EDTA; 5% CO2; 37°C. Remove all traces of trypsin from cultures during sub-culturing i.e. spin cells or neutralise with serum.
