General description

Lyso-phosphatidylcholine (LPC) is a bioactive proinflammatory lipid secreted on pathological response. It has a choline group at its polar head. Lysophosphatidylcholine (Lyso-PC) is a component of blood plasma, vascular tissue and lipoproteins.

Application

12:0 Lyso PC has been used to study its neuritogenic activity and the applications of exogenous lipids.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Lysophosphatidylcholine (LPC) alters various functions in different cell-types, like endothelial cells, smooth muscle cells, monocytes, macrophages and T-cells. It is associated with atherosclerosis and inflammatory diseases. LPC activates many second messengers including, protein kinase C, extracellular-signal-regulated kinases and protein tyrosine kinases.

We previously demonstrated that secretory phospholipase A2 (sPLA2) and lysophosphatidylcholine (LPC) exhibit neurotrophin-like neuritogenic activity in the rat pheochromocytoma cell line PC12. In this study, we further analyzed the mechanism whereby sPLA2 displays neurite-inducing activity. Exogenously added mammalian group X
