General description

Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), a topical antiseptic, is synthesized in aerobic cells as a byproduct of aerobic respiration. It might also be produced as an output of enzymatic reactions in peroxisomes, mitochondria, or other cell compartments.

Application

Hydrogen peroxide solution has been used:
  • to treat nasal epithelial cells for H2O2 sensitivity assays
  • to treat the human immortal keratinocyte cell line (HaCaT) and the human melanoma cell line (GLL19) to induce senescence
  • to incubate brain sections for bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU)/NeuN staining
  • in cell proliferation assay to incubate neural stem cells (NE-4C) for in vitro experiments

Biochem/physiol Actions

Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is mainly used in wound cleaning. It can kill the pathogens through oxidation burst and by producing local oxygen. H2O2 functions as a signaling molecule or second messenger. It plays a key role in gene expression in numerous ways. H2O2 participates in modulating inflammation.
