General description

Valnemulin Hydrochloride is an antibiotic which belongs to the class of compounds known as pleuromutilins. It is a semisynthetic derivative of the naturally occurring antibiotic tiamulin. Valnemulin Hydrochloride has activity against various Gram-positive and some Gram-negative bacteria, including Mycoplasma and some anaerobic bacteria, as well as the protozoan parasite Eimeria.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Valnemulin Hydrochloride inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S subunit of the bacterial ribosome. More specifically, it binds to the peptidyl transferase center of the ribosome and interferes with the transfer of amino acids to growing polypeptide chains, leading to the inhibition of protein synthesis and bacterial death.
