General description

Loss on Drying (LOD) USP 731 proficiency testing material is produced in accordance with ISO/IEC 17043:2010. The PT portfolio allows our test components to offer significant performance data to monitor and prove competency to customers, accreditation bodies or both.

Preparation Note


  • Dry a glass-stoppered, shallow weighing bottle for 30 min under the same conditions as designated for the sample.
  • Tare the stoppered bottle.
  • Add the test specimen, in the approximate designated amount, to the bottle and accurately weigh.
  • Spread the sample as evenly as is practical in the weighing bottle.
  • Place the bottle in the drying chamber and remove the stopper leaving it in the drying chamber.
  • Dry the sample according to the conditions stated. For heated samples, cool in a desiccator.
  • Weigh the stoppered bottle containing the sample.
  • Calculate the % loss.

  • Conditions: 105 °C for 3 hours
  • Approx Wt.: 0.5 - 1g
  • Expected Range: 0 to 50%
