Gene Information

human ... ICAM3(3385)

General description

The gene ICAM3 (intercellular adhesion molecule 3) encodes type I membrane glycoprotein that belongs to the immunoglobulin (ig) superfamily. The encoded protein is extensively glycosylated and contains five Ig-like domains that share high homology with corresponding domains in ICAM-1 and ICAM-2. ICAM3 is found to be expressed on all leukocytes, including the resting leukocytes. The gene is mapped to human chromosome 19p13.2.

Immunogen

stimulated human leukocytes.

Biochem/physiol Actions

The protein intercellular adhesion molecule 3 (ICAM-3) functions as a receptor for LFA-1 (leukocyte function-associated antigen-1) and mediates adhesive interactions of leukocyte cell surface adhesion molecules in inflammatory and immune response. LFA-1 participates in several processes, such as T cell-mediated killing, T helper and B lymphocyte responses, natural killing, Ab-dependent cellular cytotoxicity by monocytes and granulocytes, and adherence of leukocytes to endothelial cells, fibroblasts, and epithelial cells. ICAM-3 mediates the adhesion of resting T lymphocytes to LFA-1 and participates in the initiation of immune responses. It may also function in lymphocyte activation, as well as in adhesion.

We have characterized the immunobiology of the interaction of intercellular adhesion molecule 3 (ICAM-3; CD50) with its counter-receptor, leukocyte function-associated antigen 1 (LFA-1; CD11a/CD18). Purified ICAM-3 supported LFA-1-dependent adhesion in a temperature- and cation-dependent manner. Activation of cells bearing LFA-1

Intercellular adhesion molecule 5 (ICAM-5, telencephalin) is a cell adhesion molecule expressed on neurons in the most rostral segment of the mammalian brain, the telencephalon. Antibody studies in rodents and rabbits have demonstrated expression of this molecule on the cell
