General description

Reverse T3, also known as rT3 or 3,3′,5′-Triiodo-L-thyronine, is a biologically inactive form of the thyroid hormone T3 and is produced in the body particularly during periods of stress. Under certain conditions such as fibromyalgia, liver disease, and chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), more rT3 is produced which minimizes the desirable conversion of thyroxine (T4) to T3. Reverse T3 serum concentrations are measured by LC-MS/MS to monitor impact of these and other diseases on thyroid hormone levels.

Application

  • Reverse T3 solution for thyroid research: Reverse T3 (3,3′,5′-Triiodo-L-thyronine) is utilized in biochemical assays to assess thyroid function and metabolism. Its role as an inactive metabolite of thyroid hormone makes it critical in studies investigating thyroid hormone balance and its impact on metabolic rate (Filetti et al., 1980).

  • High-purity rT3 thyroid hormone analog: Due to its high purity and stability, Reverse T3 is essential in thyroid metabolism research, providing a reliable standard for comparing thyroid activity and understanding its biological effects in health and disease states.

  • Thyroid metabolism research using Reverse T3: rT3 is instrumental in the study of thyroid hormone metabolism pathways, particularly in understanding the conversion processes of T4 to T3 and rT3, aiding in deciphering the complex regulatory mechanisms of thyroid hormones.

  • Reverse T3 in comparative endocrinology studies: The application of Reverse T3 solution extends to comparative endocrinology, where it is used to study the variations and similarities in thyroid hormone metabolism among different species, contributing to broader biological and evolutionary insights.

Protocols

Determination of the thyroid hormones T4, T3 and rT3 from plasma using an Ascentis Express RP-Amide cartridge to trap the analytes, and a Phenyl-Hexyl column to resolve them.

Thyroid hormones play critical roles in the regulation of biological processes, such as growth, metabolism, protein synthesis, and brain development. For a clinical laboratory, fast and reliable measurements of total hormone levels are important for the diagnosis and monitoring of thyroid diseases.
