Pipettors

Multi-channel pipetting for liquid dispensing

A pipettor is a pipetting aid used to facilitate the process of transferring liquid samples. It provides several advantages, including minimizing the risk of contamination, reducing hand fatigue, and decreasing stress during long working hours. By using a pipettor, researchers can achieve more accurate and precise liquid handling, ensuring reliable results in various laboratory applications. They come in various sizes and types, and usually consist of a slender tube with a tapered tip utilizing mechanisms such as a piston or bulb for aspirating and dispensing liquids.

Mechanical Pipettors

Mechanical pipettors use various mechanisms, such as pistons or air displacement, to aspirate and dispense a measured volume of liquid. These pipettors offer benefits such as accuracy, repeatability, and ease of use, making them suitable for various applications, including sample preparation, solution dispensing, and mixing. Mechanical pipettors are available in various sizes and formats to meet the specific needs of researchers in different scientific fields.

Repeat Pipettors

Repeat pipettors, also known as repeating pipettes, are designed to simplify and accelerate repetitive liquid handling tasks, such as dispensing reagents or aliquoting samples. They have adjustable volume settings and a rotating plunger or dial mechanism, enabling researchers to set the desired volume for repeated dispensing. These pipettors eliminate the need for repetitive pipetting with regular pipettes, saving time and reducing errors. Repeat pipettors are widely used in various scientific fields, including molecular biology, microbiology, and clinical diagnostics.

Electronic Pipettors

Electronic pipettors incorporate electronic components and mechanisms to precisely measure and dispense specific volumes of liquids. They are more ergonomic and minimize the need for exerting force during sample aspiration and dispensing, effectively reducing the possible development of injuries due to repetitive pipetting.

Pipette Controllers

Pipette Controllers allow you to quickly fill and release accurate volumes. They attach to a pipette, which can be glass or plastic, and are used for holding the liquid or volume itself.

A pipette controller is ideal for transferring growth media and other liquids for cell cultures, bacteria and yeast cultures, and sample prep (DNA/RNA/protein extraction). It can also be used to transfer liquids such as buffers, chemicals, and other reagents.

Positive Displacement Pipettors

Positive displacement pipettors are particularly useful for pipetting high viscous or foaming liquids, liquids with high density or vapor pressure, or delicate liquids that may be difficult to handle with other pipetting techniques. These pipettors are ideal for handling liquids that are prone to contamination, such as DNA, RNA, proteins, or infectious samples. The piston forms a tight seal with the disposable piston tip, preventing any liquid from coming into contact with the pipettor itself. Positive displacement pipettors can handle a broad range of liquid types, including aqueous solutions, oils, organic solvents, and volatile substances.

Eppendorf Pipettors

Eppendorf® Reference® 2 Manual

Eppendorf® Reference® 2 Manual pipettor is designed with an ergonomic single button and demonstrates high precision and accuracy with reduced operating efforts. It is fully autoclavable, thus preventing decontamination. This pipettor is available as a single-channel pipettor in fixed or variable volume, as well as in 8- and 12-channel configurations. It is used for various tasks, including forward pipetting, reverse pipetting, removal of supernatants, sample mixing, phase extraction, and filling of plates, gels, and reaction vessels.

Eppendorf® Research Plus

Eppendorf® ResearchPluss is one of the safest and most ergonomic mechanical pipettors. It meets the highest requirements for precision and accuracy but also offers a high degree of flexibility. Its lightweight design and reduced pipetting effort help to relieve hand and arm strain. Available as single-channel fixed or variable volume, and 8-, 12, 16- or 24-channel variable volume configurations.

Eppendorf® Xplorer®

Eppendorf® Xplorer®/ Eppendorf Xplorer® plus pipettors are electronic pipettors available in single-, 8-, 12-, 16-, and 24-channel configurations. They are designed for aspirating and dispensing liquid volumes ranging from 0.5 µL to 10 mL. These pipettes are known for their simplicity, speed, and precision. They are used for automated pipetting of liquids, reverse pipetting for non-aqueous solutions, and manual filling of plates, gels, and reaction vessels.

Eppendorf® Move It

Eppendorf® Move It multichannel pipettors with adjustable tip spacing speed up and simplify the simultaneous pipetting of multiple samples. A unique design without hose connections ensures increased precision and durability as well as safety for users and samples. Since the Move It multichannel pipettes with adjustable tip spacing are designed without hoses, the pipette head can be rotated a full 360°. The user benefits from the comfortable readability of the display. This not only supports an ergonomic and relaxed posture but also ensures that all parameters are quickly identified, saving valuable time at the laboratory bench.

Eppendorf® Easypet

Eppendorf® Easypet Pipette Controller offers precision and complete speed control, making it perfect for serial dispensing and resuspending bacterial or cell pellets. This lightweight and well-balanced device has been designed with ergonomic considerations, ensuring a comfortable fit in your hand and enabling fatigue-free pipetting. Also, it is compatible with all types of serological and volumetric pipettes, ranging from volumes of 0.1 – 100 mL.

Eppendorf® Multipette

Eppendorf® Multipette Pipettor is used for repetitive dispensing of volumes, which accelerates long pipetting series by eliminating the need for repeated liquid aspiration. It is a convenient and efficient tool commonly used in laboratories to save time and effort when handling multiple samples that require the same volume of liquid to be dispensed. The Eppendorf® Multipette Pipettor excels in handling liquids of various densities, viscosities, and volatilities within a volume range of 1 µl to 10 mL (with a maximum draw of 50 mL). Also, its unique feature allows for repeated liquid dispensing and aspiration up to 100 times without the need to refill the pipette tip.

Corning® Pipettor

Corning® Lambda® plus pipettors are fully autoclavable and UV-resistant, exhibiting high levels of accuracy and reproducibility. They are available as single or multi-channel pipettors and can be fitted with all common brand pipet tips. These pipettors have been designed to maintain their calibration, even after repeated use and autoclaving.

Pipette vs. Pipettor

A pipette, also known as a pipet, is a graduated glass or plastic tube used to measure and dispense precise volumes of liquid. Pipettes come in various shapes and sizes, such as serological pipettes, micropipettes, volumetric pipettes, and Pasteur pipettes. A pipetting aid such as a pipette controller or pipette bulb is usually used to siphon and dispense samples from the pipette.

A pipettor is a type of pipetting aid that operates by piston-driven air displacement. It generates a vacuum by moving a metal or ceramic piston vertically within an airtight sleeve. As the piston moves upward, driven by the depression of the plunger, a vacuum is created and the liquid around the tip moves into this vacuum and can then be transported and released as necessary. These pipettors are capable of being very precise and accurate but are subject to inaccuracies caused by the changing environment, particularly temperature and user technique. To mitigate these issues, it is essential to diligently maintain the equipment and provide training to users to ensure consistent technique.

To minimize musculoskeletal disorders caused by repetitive pipetting, electronic pipettes commonly replace the mechanical version. These are designed to be more ergonomic and comfortable for users, which makes them ideal for high-throughput applications requiring more accuracy, precision, and consistency.
