Cell Counting Equipment

The Scepter™ 3.0 handheld coulter counter counts cells right in the culture hood

Accurate, reproducible counts of cultured cells or cells dissociated from solid tissues are essential for monitoring proliferation rate and cell health, analyzing transformation or immortalization success, and seeding for continued propagation or downstream experiments.

Traditional manual methods like hemocytometry that rely on visual counts may be appropriate in some high-risk settings. Though widely accessible, hemocytometry is low-throughput; relies on technician accuracy in mixing, pipetting, and calculation; may use biohazardous dyes; and relies on the manual transcription of data. Automated cell counters provide a higher-throughput alternative to hemocytometry, but most automated cell counters also use vision-based technology to extrapolate counts from small samples, and typically require dyes, dedicated reagents, or both.

The Scepter™ 3.0 Handheld Automated Cell Counter

Manual counting methods are time-consuming for modern research labs, and many automated counters are bulky and costly, employ visual counting of small samples, and require special tubes and reagents.

The Scepter™ 3.0 Cell Counter is the only automated cell counter that is portable and handheld, and the only device to bring the accuracy and consistency of Coulter impedance counting right to the culture hood. While other automated counters consume bench space and rely on object recognition software, manual focusing, and hand-filled loading chambers, the Scepter® 3.0 cell counter provides true automation without the risk of error that accompanies vision-based systems. With its microfabricated, precision-engineered microfluidic sensor, the Scepter® 3.0 cell counter counts thousands of cells per sample, and does the work of assessment and calculation to deliver accurate, consistent cell counts in less than 30 seconds.

Cell counting is fast, reproducible and precise with the Scepter™ 3.0 handheld cytometer based on Coulter impedance counting

Hemocytometer manual cell counting device

Millicell® Disposable Hemocytometer

The original hemocytometer was designed to count blood cells and is traditionally a thick glass slide with chamber of precise volume and a gridded glass surface that enables the microscopic counting of cells per a volume of fluid. When high-risk samples must be counted, a disposable hemocytometer protects the lab by eliminating the need to clean and reuse fragile and potentially dangerous glass hemocytometers and coverslips. The Millicell® disposable hemocytometer is made of quartz-grade optical plastic and works just like the familiar Neubauer counting chamber. Eliminate the need to handle coverslips and disinfect counting equipment by disposing of single-use hemocytometers into biohazardous waste.
