Cyclin E (UniProt: P24864; also known as G1/S-specific cyclin-E1) is encoded by the CCNE1 (also known as CCNE) gene (Gene ID: 898) in human. Cyclin E is a nuclear protein that is essential for the control of the cell cycle at the G1/S transition. Its high expression is observed in testis and placenta and lower expression is observed in bronchial epithelial cells. The major role of cyclin E is to promote the assembly of the prereplication complex, through the loading of Cdc6 to the origins of replication and recruitment of the minichromosome maintenance protein complex (Mcm2-7), during the transition from quiescent G0 to G1 phases of the cell cycle and subsequently to trigger replication origin to allow cells to enter S phase. Cyclin E interacts with CDK2 to form a serine/threonine kinase holoenzyme complex where the cyclin subunit imparts substrate specificity to the complex.
