General description

Isovanillic acid 3-O-sulfate (IVAS) is a gut microbial phenolic metabolite primarily derived from consumed cyanidin 3-O-glucoside, a major compound in berry fruits. IVAS is the most effective among the gut microbial phenolic metabolites tested to enhance glucose uptake & metabolism in human skeletal muscle myoblast LHCN-M2. IIVAS is shown to increase glucose transport via GLUT4- and PI3K-dependent mechanisms. IVAS also upregulates GLUT1, GLUT4, PI3K p85a protein level, and Akt phosphorylation, establishing a novel link between gut microbiota, host diet and skeletal muscle energy source utilization. Also another study shows that IVAS restores glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) level and reduce inflammatory markers in diabetic human aortic endothelial cells (HAECs).
