Gene Information

human ... IL37(27178)

General description

IL-37 (interleukin 37) is an anti-inflammatory cytokine and is also termed as IL-1 family member 7 (IL-1F7). IL-37 belongs to the IL-1 cytokine family. This protein is expressed in blood monocytes, endothelial cells, adipocytes and epithelial cells. IL-37 is located on human chromosome 2q12.

Immunogen

Antibody was raised against a 17 amino acid peptide near the amino terminus of human IL-37.

Biochem/physiol Actions

IL-37 (interleukin 37) acts as a suppressor for innate immunity and acquired immunity. IL-37 participates in the immunosuppressive property of human CD4+CD25+ regulatory T cells. It represses the synthesis of several pro-inflammatory cytokines like IL-1α, IL-1β, IL-6, IL-12, granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-SCF), granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) and TNF-α (tumor necrosis factor alpha). It plays an important role in adaptive immunity.

The IL-1 family of cytokines encompasses eleven proteins that each share a similar β-barrel structure and bind to Ig-like receptors. Some of the IL-1-like cytokines have been well characterised, and play key roles in the development and regulation of inflammation.
